The F-15 is a superior air superiority fighter with a long and distinguished service history dating back to its first flight in July 1971. It grew quickly into a cornerstone of the U.S. Air Force, and in 1976 was tabbed for use by the Japan Air Self Defense Force, with the C variant being used as a base for the Japanese F-15J. The tandem F-15DJ was also introduced. March 1983 saw the delivery of two McDonnell Douglas-built F-15J aircraft, with Mitsubishi taking over licensed production from that December. The F-15J was armed with a 20 mm Vulcan cannon and four each of Sparrow and Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, while its fire control system and navigation systems were computerized. The F-15 could achieve speeds up to Mach 2.5 and boasted record climb rate, facts which highlight the prowess of the Eagle.
